Please check out what we have been getting up to for the Active School Flag:
Active School Flag
Learning from Afar
I hope you are all keeping safe and well in these unfamiliar times.
In light of the fact that school is unlikely to reopen soon the teachers are looking at new ways of teaching and learning.
In the short term try some of the work the teachers sent home. If you have any queries email firstname.lastname@example.org.We will get back to you as quick as we can.
This is an unprecedented time and we are all trying to get used to the new normal. We need to make sure we are happy and safe before we can focus on learning. We need to keep busy and stay healthy.
The teachers have put together lists of websites, videos etc which may help. These can be accessed via our homepage.
Remember the most important thing is to be kind to each other at this time. Children be kind to your parents and try to count to 20 before you complain yet again of being bored. Help with the chores, kick a ball, practise yoga or meditate, it all helps.
Parents we know the stresses and worries of this new normal. If the kids can spend some time reading its great. If they do some school work even better. If this doesn't happen dont blame yourselves or stress. Things will even out eventually.
Finally my prayers and thoughts are with you all. My best wishes to you all for Easter. Hopefully you get a few eggs and things will return to normal soon.
We hope to see everyone soon.
This year, we have decided to work towards earning the The Pieta House Amber Flag for our school, which is awarded to schools and companies who have worked towards creating a safe, healthy and inclusive environment that supports positive mental health and well-being. We will be organising a wide range of activities to include all members of the school community such as mindfulness and meditation, celebrating World Mental Health Day and holding fundraisers for Pieta House, as well as continuing activities already taking place in the school. The first step of this journey for our school was to establish an Amber Flag committee representative of each class group. This group will be heavily involved in the organisation and facilitation of activities within the school throughout the year and will communicate the ideas and thoughts of the pupils regarding mental health and well-being to the teachers, ensuring that the process is as child-led and relevant as possible. In September, two committee groups were set up; the Amber Flag Committee, which features children from First Class to Sixth Class, and the Mini-Mindfulness Committee, featuring children from Junior and Senior Infants. We've already been working hard on planning activities and events for the school and are looking forward to a great year of promoting positive mental health and well-being! Yoga in Shanganamore N.S.
Our weekly yoga sessions began this month as part of the school's approach to promoting positive mental health and the importance of physical activity in our daily lives. Siobhán, our yoga instructor, has been teaching us about mindfulness and how to listen to our bodies. The children have been learning about relaxation and breathing techniques to calm and soothe and have been trying out a number of yoga poses each week. Take a look at some of the boys and girls practising "ocean breathing", carrying out sun salutations and exploring the concept of mindful eating by holding a biscuit, noticing how it looked, taking in the smell of the biscuit, savouring its taste and listening to the crunching sound as they chewed.
Our School Garden
Following the sun and rain of the summer months, our school vegetable garden has had a make over and is in full bloom this Autumn. Ned made up some fabulous raised vegetables beds for the garden during the summer holidays. We have onions, lettuce, carrots and rhubarb growing in the garden. Pupils sowed pumpkins in the classroom in paper cups last April and we replanted them in May. We now have a pumpkin patch with large pumpkins growing which will be harvested in time for Hallowe'en celebrations. We would like to say a massive thank you to Ned Gleeson for all his fantastic work.
