About Us
Shanganamore N.S is a five teacher National school in Co. Laois, it caters for the primary educational needs of children from the local Barrowhouse area in which it sits and the surrounding townlands. The school originally occupied the building set within the adjacent church
grounds, now the local community hall. The current school building was built in 1999 and officially opened by John Moloney T.D in May of that year.
The school was originally a one, then two teacher school but now has a total of five mainstream class teachers and two Resource/Learning Support teachers, overseen by a Board of Management which is comprised of members from the local community as well as staff. Most classrooms are multi- classed with mixed students of either gender. The school is child centered in its approach and at its core is the objective, Fás agus foghlaim.
As the school has grown in size and demographics, its staff have embraced current educational developments with regular upskilling and training courses completed annually. The school has a strong focus on a holistic approach to education , and incorporates positive health/mindfulness programmes, for physical and emotional well-being , into all its objectives.
The school and its staff have a strong sense of the great potential that is in all its students and endeavour to guide the pupils in areas of learning that of interest to them whether through conventional sports, e.g G.A.A and Rugby as well as our yearly “ Active weeks”, which provide opportunities for all to explore a myriad of sports. Drama and writing is encouraged through our drama classes, Christmas plays and our annual F.IS. Film in school participation. Opportunities to explore and develop scientific thought is encouraged through out participation in Discover Primary Science and Young scientist projects.
This year our school became the first school in Co. Laois to be awarded a Health promoting School flag. It was one of many awards the school has been presented with in recent years, in 2014 the boys football team won their Cumann na Mbunscoil County Final. In 2012 the children who participated in F.I.S were awarded a national award for Historical drama for their film based on a local ambush in the locality during our War of Independence. Two Discover Primary Science awards were also garnered in 2013 and 2014.
Shanganamore N.S will continue to keep the children who attend the school at its core and endeavour to provide through learning, a full and varied educational curriculum where children can learn and succeed to the very best of their abilities.
